Sam talks is joined by Peter Gelb, General Manager of the Met Opera House, to discuss the brand new documentary The Opera House and the history of live cinema broadcast as pioneered by the Met. Peter offers up some hot tips for must-sees in the next Met season.
The Opera House, a new film by award-winning documentary filmmaker Susan Froemke, surveys a remarkable period of the Metropolitan Opera’s rich history and a time of great change for New York. Featuring rarely seen archival footage, stills, recent interviews, and a soundtrack of extraordinary Met performances, the film chronicles the creation of the Met’s storied home of the last 50 years, against the backdrop of the artists, architects, and politicians who shaped the cultural life of New York City in the ’50s and ’60s.
Among the notable figures in the film are famed soprano Leontyne Price, who opened the new Met in 1966 in Samuel Barber’s Antony and Cleopatra; Rudolf Bing, the Met’s imperious General Manager, who engineered the move from the old house to the new one; Robert Moses, the unstoppable city planner who bulldozed an entire neighborhood to make room for Lincoln Center; and Wallace Harrison, whose quest for architectural glory was never fully realized.

The third feature length film to come out of Kilkenny-based animation studio Cartoon Saloon, after The Secret of Kells (2009) and Song of the Sea (2015), Nora Twomey’s The Breadwinner revolves around the daily struggles facing 11-year-old Parvana in Taliban-controlled Kabul, Afghanistan. This allows Parvana to move around the city and work to provide the money the family need to survive. In a culture where females are forbidden from travelling anywhere alone, this places Parvana in constant danger, but desperate times call for desperate solutions.

Thursday May 17, 2018
Sam talks to director Dominic Cooke and actor Billy Howle about their new film On Chesil Beach.
It’s 1962, and two young newlyweds from very different backgrounds (Billy Howle and Saoirse Ronan) have chosen to spend their honeymoon on the windswept beaches of Dorset. They’re inexperienced and new to love; a nervous energy fills the air at their first dinner as a married couple. But these aren’t just wedding-night jitters: as the evening progresses it becomes clear that something else is creating the divide. Awkwardly grasping for the connection they know they share, the pair recall moments from their lives, both together and apart, as the inevitability of physical intimacy hangs over them.
Directed with great skill by four-time Olivier Award-winner Dominic Cooke, this is Ian McEwan’s heartfelt and sensitive adaptation of his bestselling novel of the same name.

A white-knuckle tale of transgression and transformation, Revenge gloriously blurs the lines of vengeance and survival while simultaneously delivering a ferocious dissection of gender and genre.
